A gracious perch of Athens

Gracefully situated 277 meters above sea level, right in the center of Athens stands tall the mesmerizing Lycabettus Hill. Showcasing a rich history, dating all the way back to the cradle of history, the hill has many stories left to be shared with the visitors. During Pericles times, hill’s lush greenery used to be a lair for the wolves that roamed the area. According to historians’ scripts, this was actually the last haven of wolves near the city of Athens. Lycabettus Hill owes its name to Wordsworth, who came to the conclusion that he found hill’s ancient name, and it has stuck until our days.
Fortunately, the hill isn’t populated by wolves anymore. It is a mesmerizing perch, conveniently located in the center of the city. On top of the hill lies a church, dedicated to Saint George. The hill also hosts the amphitheater called Lykavettos. There, many prestigious events take place featuring local and international artists. Especially during summer months, the amphitheater has a lead role in Athens cultural events.
If following the path all the way up to Lycabettus Hill seems a little hard for you, then you can take the Funicular Railway. This train looks a bit odd but it certainly does its job right. The sad thing is that there is no view on the way up as the train is engulfed by a tunnel.
The panoramic views over the city will reward you. From the hill, you can enjoy breathtaking to Piraeus, Acropolis, the center of the town and all the points of interest.
Don’t miss out Athens best perch during your visit there. Lycabettus Hill should be at the top of your bucket list!
