The Greek Parliament House

The Greek Parliament House lies north of Syntagma square. There is no way to miss out this imposing, austere neoclassical edifice. The building has three floors and two entrances for the entering of the MPs. In front of the Parliament House, you can admire the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier while the charming set includes the National Gardens and Zappeion Megaron, found only a stone’s throw away.
The building’s construction lasted approximately over eight years, from 1836 till 1842. It was designed by Friedrich von Gartner to be the Royal Palace for the Greek kings, namely King Otto and Queen Amalia. After the disastrous fire of 1909, the edifice underwent some restorations and after the monarchy was abolished in 1924, the building was used as a museum and a hospital respectively. In 1929, it was decided to use former Palace as the new Parliament House and move from the old Old Parliament House in Stadiou street, which is currently operating as the Historical Museum.
The once Ball Room, situated on the ground floor, is now the main Chamber of Parliament. It features amphitheatrical layout and its quite luminous. When you visit the Greek Parliament opt for the balcony above the Chamber that is used as the visitor's gallery.
Step out of the Parliament House to see the change of guards. It offers quite a spectacle to the visitors. Evzones, a Greek infantry unit guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a monument dedicated to honor those died or bled for their country. Evzones wear traditional Greek uniforms while during their service they cannot talk or move at all!
