Meet Athens' most majestic stage

Take a stroll to the historic center of Athens. At some point, it’s sure to encounter the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. Described by the Greek traveler and geographer Pausanias as “the finest building of its type,” the stunning Odeon of Herodes Atticus stands proudly underneath the slopes of the remarkable Acropolis. Odeons were initially built in the ancient times to host musical contests. Herodeon, as locals simply call it was the house of many prestigious musical events back in the day while after it opened its gates again sixty years ago, numerous renowned artists stepped on its stage.
The landmark edifice was built between 160AD – 174AD by city’s wealthy benefactor Herodes Atticus. The Odeon was dedicated to his wife Rigilla. Showcasing an entirely different architectural style than its other counterparts, Odeon of Herodes Atticus is distinctively Roman. Its first form was quite different than today. A roof was covering the biggest part of the Odeon with wood and tiles. It has thirty-five rows that can host up to 4680 people. The once circular orchestra is now semi-circle with marbles in white and black hues.
One hundred years after its implementation, the edifice was destroyed during the invasion of Erouloi in 268 AD while during Ottoman occupation was damaged again. In the years 1898, 1900 and 1922, the Herodeon was partly restored. Until the 1950s when the Odeon of Herodes Atticus was reconstructed, the venue hosted some public events. After its grand re-opening, the Herodeon has emerged as a major cultural center, where world-renowned artists offer remarkable performances.
